About Wikiscan

Wikiscan is an independent statistics site on Wikipedia and other wikis hosted by Wikimedia Foundation . Wikiscan is not linked to the Wikimedia Foundation , the statistics published here are not official.

Wikiscan was created in 2011 on the initiative of a voluntary user.

Most of the software development was done on a voluntary basis. Part of it was subsidized by the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia France association. Server hosting is currently supported by the Wikimedia France association.

Data sources used

Wikiscan only uses public data from the analyzed wikis, in particular: replications of Wikimedia databases, pageview dataset, Mediawiki API.

Privacy policy

Published content

Wikiscan does not directly collect information from users of the site, there is no registration.

The information published on the site comes from public data from analyzed wikis.

These wikis are published under the free license CC BY-SA and are subject to the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy , which states in particular:

"Be aware: Any content you add or any change that you make to a Wikimedia Site will be publicly and permanently available."

"Publicly Visible Information: [...] you should assume that information that you actively contribute to the Wikimedia Sites, including Personal Information, is publicly visible and can be found by search engines. Like most things on the Internet, anything you share may be copied and redistributed throughout the Internet by other people. Please do not contribute any information that you are uncomfortable making permanently public, like revealing your real name or location in your contributions."

For any rectification or deletion concerning this data, you must contact the wiki concerned, Wikiscan will then be automatically updated with the new information during the next updates (for example a renamed user). Wikiscan cannot know whether or not you are the holder of this data. In case of problems, you can optionally send an email to wikiscan (at) gmail.com.

Technical data

Cookie : Wikiscan does not currently use any cookies.

Audience measurement (analytics): Wikiscan use Google analytics but greatly limit the transmission of information:

  • Use only from the server, so the visitor is never directly connected to the Google analytics servers that receive the data.
  • The IP address sent contains only the first two bytes (for example 1.2.3.4 is replaced by 1.2.0.0).
  • No use of cookies or other storage methods on the browser to identify the same user. However, in order to have an idea of the number of visitors to the site, an identifier is calculated on the server with the IP address and the browser used, without it being possible to trace this information from the result (salted hash function). Otherwise a user visiting 5 pages would be counted 5 times. This data is not stored by Wikiscan.

Logging system: Web servers log accesses so that they can identify the source of incidents and protect the server in the event of abuse or attack. However, in order to limit as much as possible the data recorded in normal times, Wikiscan excludes the IP address of the visitor from the access log of the web server (access.log). Normal use of the site therefore does not result in the recording of the visitor's IP address. In order to limit abuse, the web server error log (error.log) continues to record IP addresses. The logging of IPs for normal access can possibly be reactivated temporarily in order to protect the site, in particular in the event of an attack.
